Much faith has been placed in the innate ingenuity of the human race to engineer its way out of climate disaster. And while the modern spirit of innovation gives cause for hope, there are manifold technologies already primed to make a material difference to industrial emissions on a global scale. Efforts to combat climate change require a balanced mix of well-defined policies and financial support schemes that promote the adoption of proven and market-ready technologies.
Policy for such technologies varies from supportive to non-existent depending on the region. In Europe particularly, the EU’s decision to support a number of “big bet” technologies with subsidies may mean that the continent is missing out on vital, underexplored decarbonization opportunities. Those technologies that are not among the big bets lack substantive incentives, in spite of their proven effectiveness as emissions reducers.
This critical missed opportunity was identified as part of the recent GET Congress 2024 Leadership Roundtable “Overlooked and underutilized: Boosting uptake of viable climate technologies”.
