The Paris Agreement required signatories to affirm the importance of public awareness, engagement and participation in the transition to a lower carbon future. This was an acknowledgement that net zero can only be achieved with the consent of citizens.
But there have been numerous examples in recent years where actions designed to reduce emissions have had an adverse impact on at-risk communities.
In such cases, policymakers and business leaders need to understand the impact of their decisions, and the roots of the opposition they may face. Communictaion is key – but it has to align with reality. The slickest communications strategy in the world will not help if the messaging conflicts with the reality of the actions being taken.
These were among the key observations during the recent GET Congress 2024 Leadership Roundtable “Citizen and community empowerment for a people-led energy transition”.
